Xamiol gel (pronounced "zamiol"), containing calcipotriol and betamethasone dipropionate, combines the effects of a Vitamin D-like ingredient to help normalise the speed at which skin cells are produced and a steroid to reduce inflammation.
Xamiol (Calcipotriol/Betamethasone Dipropionate) is a new treatment which combines calcipotriol and betamethasone dipropionate in a gel. Xamiol gel treats the symptoms of scalp psoriasis (i.e. itching, scaling and redness) and helps normalise the skin cells and improve the immunologic changes in psoriatic skin.
The new combination gel Xamiol should be applied once-daily. The treatment period may last for 4 weeks, but your doctor may decide on a different or repeated treatment for continuous disease control. The new combination gel is indicated for all severity grades of scalp psoriasis, e.g. mild, moderate or severe scalp psoriasis.
There is no need to use a descaling agent while using Xamiol Gel, such as salicylic acid, before starting the treatment. Xamiol gel works effectively directly on the scales.
Typical scalp psoriasis treatments include coal tar, dithranol, salicylic acid, steroid creams and ointments, as well as Vitamin D based treatments. Xamiol gel is an almost clear and odourless gel that is simply applied once-daily: for example in the evening, then left on overnight and washed out the following morning.
Xamiol gel combination is manufactured by LEO Pharma and is available with a prescription for the topical treatment of scalp psoriasis in adults. Xamiol is applied to affected areas of the scalp once-daily for four weeks unless directed otherwise by a physician.
