Atripla (efavirenz, emtricitabine, tenofovir)tablets are a combination of three widely used antiretroviral drugs that are taken as one tablet (one per day) for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus -1 (HIV-1) infection in adult patients. Atripla tablets can be taken alone or combination with other medicines to treat HIV-1.

Atripla (Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate) is an antiretroviral combination medicine used alone or with other medicines to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in adults.

Atripla combines three drugs (efavirenz, emtricitabine, tenofovir) in a single pill also known as a fixed-dose combination package having three drugs in a single pill.

The most common side effects of Atripla include headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and rash.

SEVERE AND SOMETIMES FATAL LACTIC ACIDOSIS (buildup of lactic acid in the blood) has occurred in some patients taking medicines similar to Atripla.

This risk may be greater in women, obese/overweight patients, those who have been taking nucleoside medicines (such as emtricitabine) for a long time. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you develop extreme weakness or tiredness; unusual muscle pain; trouble breathing; stomach pain with nausea or vomiting; cold feeling, especially in the arms and legs; severe or persistent dizziness or lightheadedness; or fast or irregular heartbeat.

Very serious and/or fatal liver problems have occurred in some patients taking medicine similar to Atripla. It is very important to contact your doctor as soon as possible if you develop conditions such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, loss of appetite, severe or persistent nausea, or stomach pain.

Atripla (Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate) offers a one pill, once a day treatment option for patients receiving antiretroviral therapy. This was done to simlify the dosing of HIV meds and encourage patients to take all their medications by encouraging compliance.

Swallow ATRIPLA with water.

Taking ATRIPLA at bedtime may make some side effects less bothersome.

Do not miss a dose of ATRIPLA. If you forget to take ATRIPLA, take the missed dose right away, unless it is almost time for your next dose. It is important not to miss Atripla Doses because the amount of virus in your blood may increase if the medicine is stopped for even a short time. The virus may develop resistance to ATRIPLA and become harder to treat.

Atripla (Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate)is not indicated for use in patients with chronic Hepatitis B infection. However, discontinuation of the treatment for HIV-1 with Atripla in patients with chronic Hepatitis B infection can result in severe flare-ups of Hepatitis B infection. Other potential serious adverse events reported for the use of Atripla’s ingredients include serious liver toxicity, renal impairment and severe depression.

The following medicines may cause serious and life-threatening side effects when taken with Atripla. You should not take any of these medicines while taking Atripla: Hismanal® (astemizole), Vascor® (bepridil), Propulsid® (cisapride), Versed® (midazolam), Orap® (pimozide), Halcion®(triazolam), ergot medications (for example, Wigraine® and Cafergot®).

Atripla also should not be used with COMBIVIR®, EMTRIVA, EPIVIR®, EPIVIR-HBV®, EPZICOM™, TRIZIVIR®, SUSTIVA, TRUVADA, or VIREAD.

Vfend® (voriconazole) should not be taken with Atripla since it may lose its effect or may increase the chance of having side effects from ATRIPLA.

It is also important to tell your healthcare provider if you are taking any of the following:

Fortovase®, Invirase® (saquinavir), Biaxin® (clarithromycin); or Sporanox® (itraconazole); these medicines may need to be replaced with another medicine when taken with Atripla.

Calcium channel blockers such as Cardizem® or Tiazac® (diltiazem), Covera HS® or Isoptin® (verapamil) and others; Crixivan® (indinavir); Methadone; Mycobutin® (rifabutin); Rifampin; cholesterol-lowering medicines such as Lipitor® (atorvastatin), PRAVACHOL® (pravastatin), and Zocor® (simvastatin); or Zoloft® (sertraline); these medicines may need to have their dose changed when taken with Atripla.

Videx®, Videx® EC (didanosine); tenofovir DF (a component of ATRIPLA) may increase the amount of didanosine in your blood, which could result in more side effects. You may need to be monitored more carefully if you are taking ATRIPLA and didanosine together. Also, the dose of didanosine may need to be changed.

Reyataz® (atazanavir sulfate) or Kaletra® (lopinavir/ritonavir); these medicines may increase the amount of tenofovir DF (a component of ATRIPLA) in your blood, which could result in more side effects. You may need to be monitored more carefully if you are taking ATRIPLA and either Reyataz or Kaletra together. Also, the dose of Reyataz or Kaletra may need to be changed.

Medicine for seizures [for example, Dilantin® (phenytoin), Tegretol® (carbamazepine), or phenobarbital]; your healthcare provider may want to switch you to another medicine or check drug levels in your blood from time to time.

Taking St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum), or products containing St. John's wort with ATRIPLA is not recommended. St. John's wort is an herbal product sold as a dietary supplement. Talk with your healthcare provider if you are taking or are planning to take St. John's wort. Taking St. John's wort may decrease ATRIPLA levels and lead to increased viral load and possible resistance to ATRIPLA or cross-resistance to other anti-HIV drugs.

These are not the only medicines that may cause problems if you take Atripla(efavirenz 600 mg/emtricitabine 200mg/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate 300 mg). That is why it is important to tell your healthcare provider about all medicines that you take.
