Azilect (Rasagiline Tablets) are indicated for the treatment of the signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD) both as initial therapy alone and to be added to levodopa later in the disease. The effectiveness of Azilect (Rasagiline Tablets) was shown in patients with early PD who were receiving Azilect (Rasagiline Tablets) as initial therapy alone and who were not receiving any other PD therapy. The effectiveness of Azilect (Rasagiline Tablets) as adjunct therapy was shown in patients with PD who were treated with levodopa.

Azilect (Rasagiline Tablets) works by blocking the breakdown of dopamine in the brain. As much as 60% to 80% of dopamine could be lost by the time PD is diagnosed. When there is more dopamine available in your brain, you are able to move more freely again.

Directions for taking Azilect (Rasagiline Tablets):

Take one Azilect (Rasagiline Tablet) just once daily—whether you’re new to PD therapy or have been taking other PD medications for years.

Azilect (Rasagiline Tablets) may be taken with or without food. If you happen to miss your dose of Azilect (Rasagiline Tablets), don’t double up. You should take your next dose as scheduled.

You should not take Azilect (Rasagiline Tablets) if you are currently taking meperidine, as it could possibly result in a serious reaction such as coma or death. Also do not take Azilect (Rasagiline Tablets) with with tramadol, methadone, propoxyphene, dextromethorphan, St. John’s wort, mirtazapine, or cyclobenzaprine. Do not take Azilect (Rasagiline Tablets) with other monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), amphetamines, cold remedies containing decongestants and weight-reducing preparations containing pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine, phenylpropanolamine, or ephedrine in order to avoid a possibly dangerous rise in blood pressure. Symptoms of a dangerous rise in blood pressure include severe headache, blurred vision, difficulty thinking, seizures, chest pain, unexplained nausea or vomiting, or signs or symptoms of a stroke.

It is very important that you seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms or other unusual symptoms occur.

Do not take Azilect (Rasagiline Tablets) if you have moderate to severe liver disease or a tumor of the adrenal gland.

Azilect Side Effects:

Azilect (Rasagiline Tablets) is generally well tolerated. Some side effects associated with Azilect (Rasagiline Tablets) alone are headaches, joint pain, and indigestion.

Side effects seen with Azilect (Rasagiline Tablets) taken with levodopa are uncontrolled movements (dyskinesias), accidental injury, nausea, weight loss, constipation, low blood pressure when standing, joint pain, vomiting, dry mouth, rash, and sleepiness. Be sure to tell your doctor about these and any other side effects you experience when taking Azilect (Rasagiline Tablets).
