Dosing Update of Levemir:
Levemir should be used once daily in combination with oral antidiabetic drugs (OAD's) or short or rapid-acting mealtime insulin.
Insulin detemir (trade name Levemir®) is a form of long acting insulin. It is different from most other long acting insulins, because it is more slowly absorbed and therefore the effects of the dose can last longer – up to 24 hours in duration.
It should be used in combination with short or rapid acting insulin, given at meal times, to achieve good glycaemic control
Insulin detemir is available in 3ml cartridges which can be used with the 'NovoPen' from Novo Nordisk, and all other Novo Nordisk pens which take 'Penfill' cartridges. Insulin detemir is also available in the FlexPen preloaded device. The Novo Nordisk pens are all available on prescription. Insulin detemir is not available in vials or in the 'InnoLet.'
Insulin detemir must not be mixed with any other insulins or solutions, and if it appears to have any sediment in it, it should not be used and must be discarded.
Cartridges and pens of insulin detemir should be kept at room temperature for one to two hours before use, if taken from the fridge. Once in use it may be kept out of the fridge for a maximum of six weeks at temperatures not above 30°C.
Hypoglycemia is the most common adverse effect of insulin therapy, including Levemir. Adverse events commonly associated with human insulin therapy include allergic reactions, injection site reaction, lipodystrophy, pruritus, and rash. Levemir is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to insulin detemir or its excipients.
