Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) used in combination with a low-cholesterol and low-fat diet to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in your blood. Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) may also be used in certain adolescent patients, age 10 to 17 years, who have a genetically caused cholesterol problem. Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) are not a cure for high cholesterol, but may help to control it. Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) may also be used in certain patients to reduce the risk of heart attack, blood vessel blockage, or chest pain. Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
ALTOPREV SIDE EFFECTS:
ALTOPREV SIDE EFFECT that may occur while taking Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) include constipation. If it continues or is bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience rash, yellow skin or eyes, unusual bleeding or bruising, or sore throat. Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) may infrequently cause muscle damage (which can rarely lead to a very serious condition called rhabdomyolysis). Stop taking Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) and CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience muscle pain/tenderness/weakness (especially with fever or unusual tiredness). An allergic reaction to Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) block the body's ability to make cholesterol. Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) can help lower blood cholesterol for patients who are at risk of getting heart disease or a stroke. Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) is only for patients whose cholesterol level is not controlled by diet. Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) is not a cure. Generic lovastatin extended-release tablets are not yet available.
Do not take Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) with any of the following:
•amprenavir
•atazanavir
•clarithromycin
•delavirdine
•erythromycin
•grapefruit juice
•indinavir
•itraconazole
•ketoconazole
•lopinavir; ritonavir
•mibefradil
•nefazodone
•nelfinavir
•ritonavir
•saquinavir
•troleandomycin
•went yeast (dietary supplement)
Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) may also interact with the following medications:
•alcohol
•amiodarone
•barbiturates (examples: phenobarbital, butalbital, primidone)
•bosentan
•carbamazepine
•cilostazol
•cyclosporine
•danazol
•diltiazem
•efavirenz
•imatinib, STI-571
•isradipine
•fluconazole
•medicines to lower cholesterol or triglycerides (examples: clofibrate, fenofibrate, gemfibrozil, niacin)
•medicine used to stop early pregnancy (mifepristone, RU-486)
•nicardipine
•oxcarbazepine
•phenytoin
•rifampin, rifabutin, or rifapentine
•St. John's Wort
•telithromycin
•verapamil
•voriconazole
•warfarin
Telll your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
Altoprev side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
Rare or uncommon:
•blurred vision, or vision changes
•dark yellow or brown urine
•decreased urination, difficulty passing urine
•fever
•muscle pain, tenderness, cramps, or weakness
•redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
•skin rash, itching
•unusual tiredness or weakness
•yellowing of the skin or eyes
Altoprev side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
•constipation or diarrhea
•difficulty sleeping
•dizziness
•headache
•nausea, vomiting
•stomach pain or indigestion
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets).
INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) if you are also taking gemfibrozil, HIV protease inhibitors (such as ritonavir, lopinavir, or nelfinavir), azole antifungals (such as itraconazole or ketoconazole), macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin, clarithromycin, or troleandomycin), telithromycin, or nefazodone. If you are currently taking any of these medicines, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting to take this medicine. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking amiodarone, "blood thinners" (such as warfarin), bosentan, cyclosporine, danazol, diltiazem, fluconazole, imatinib, high doses of niacin (1 gram or more per day), fibrates (such as clofibrate or fenofibrate), verapamil, dalfopristin, quinupristin, voriconazole, or St. John's wort.
DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including muscle problems, alcohol use, allergies (especially to other "statins"), pregnancy, or breast-feeding.
USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have a history of liver disease or abnormal liver function test results. Certain medical conditions, including low blood pressure; severe infection; uncontrolled seizures; or serious metabolic, endocrine, or electrolyte problems may increase your risk for side effects that can result in kidney problems while taking this medicine. Contact your doctor if you develop one of these conditions. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
Some medicines increase the risk of muscle side effects while taking Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets). Discuss your drug regimen with your health care provider if you are prescribed certain antibiotics or antifungals which are not recommended with lovastatin (examples: clarithromycin, erythromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole). Your prescriber may decide to temporarily stop the Altoprev (Lovastatin Extended Release Tablets) treatment while you are taking a short course of the antibiotic or antifungal therapy. Alternatively, your health care provider may prescribe another antibiotic or antifungal medicine for your condition.
