Cotazym (pancrelipase) can also be known as Cotazym-S, Creon, Ilozyme, Ku-Zyme HP, Lipram, Pancrease, Pancrecarb, Panokase, Ultrase, Viokase, Zymase.
Cotazym, Cotazym-S, Creon, Ilozyme, Ku-Zyme HP, Lipram, Pancrecarb, Pancrease, Ultrase, Viokase, Zymase) tablets or capsules improve your digestion of foods by replacing digestive enzymes. Digestive enzymes are substances produced by an organ called the pancreas; some health problems that cause the body to produce less of these enzymes. You may need to take pancrelipase if you have cystic fibrosis or chronic inflammation of your pancreas, have had your pancreas removed, or have had certain types of stomach or intestinal surgery. Generic Cotazym (pancrelipase) tablets and capsules are not available.
Tell your doctor if you have:
•acute pancreatitis
•difficulty swallowing
•esophagitis (inflammation of the tube leading from the mouth to the stomach)
•history of bowel obstruction
•frequent surgeries of the stomach or bowel
•an unusual or allergic reaction to pancrelipase, pancreatin, pork, pork protein, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
•pregnant or trying to get pregnant
•breast-feeding
Take Cotazym (pancrelipase) tablets or capsules by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the Cotazym (pancrelipase) tablets or capsules with a drink of water, do not crush or chew the Cotazym (pancrelipase) tablets or Cotazym (pancrelipase) capsules. Take Cotazym (pancrelipase) just before or with food. Drink plenty of water or juice after the dose. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take Cotazym (pancrelipase) more often than directed.
Some Cotazym (pancrelipase) capsules may be opened and sprinkled on soft foods that do not require chewing such as applesauce, instant pudding or gelatin. Do not mix in milk, ice cream, or other dairy products. Do not crush or chew Cotazym (pancrelipase). Ask your health professional or pharmacist if you need to learn how to take Cotazym (pancrelipase) this way.
Cotazym (pancrelipase) is often prescribed for children with specific health problems that impair their digestion. Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of Cotazym (pancrelipase) in children. Special care may be needed.
You should not use Cotazym (pancrelipase) if you have had an allergic reaction to pancrelipase, pancreatin, or pork protein.
Your doctor will tell you how much of Cotazym (pancrelipase) to use and how often. Your dose may need to be changed several times in order to find out what works best for you. Do not use more Cotazym (pancrelipase) or use it more often than your doctor tells you to.
Drink a full glass of water with your medicine and plenty of fluids throughout the day.
Take Cotazym (pancrelipase) with meals and snacks as directed by your doctor.
If the capsule opens, keep the powder away from your skin and avoid breathing in the powder.
Swallow the Cotazym (pancrelipase) capsules or tablets whole. Do not let it dissolve in your mouth.
Do not chew or crush the coated Cotazym (pancrelipase) tablet or delayed-released Cotazym (pancrelipase) capsule. Swallow Cotazym (pancrelipase) whole. If the capsule is too big to swallow, open the capsule and put the contents on soft food (such as applesauce) and swallow without chewing. Do not mix the capsule with alkaline foods or liquids such as milk.
Take the powder with meals. Avoid breathing in the powder. It can be very irritating to your lungs. Do not get the powder on your skin.
If you miss a dose or forget to use Cotazym (pancrelipase), use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to use Cotazym (pancrelipase) and skip the missed dose. Do not use extra Cotazym (pancrelipase) to make up for a missed dose.
Store Cotazym (pancrelipase) at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture unless otherwise stated by manufacturer's instructions or labelling. Keep Cotazym (pancrelipase) and all other medications out of the reach of children.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Make sure your doctor knows if you are taking iron supplements or vitamins that contain iron. Check with your doctor before taking Cotazym (pancrelipase) if you have severe pancreas disease or other medical problems. If you are pregnant or breast feeding, talk to your doctor before taking Cotazym (pancrelipase).
Cotazym (pancrelipase) Side Effects:
Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these Cotazym (pancrelipase) side effects:
Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing. If you notice these less serious side effects, talk with your doctor:
Diarrhea, constipation, nausea, or vomiting.
Stomach upset or cramps.
Cotazym (pancrelipase) side effects are rare at recommended doses. Cotazym (pancrelipase) side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•diarrhea (severe or continuing)
•mouth irritation
•muscle aches or pains
•nausea, vomiting
•skin rash
•stomach pain
•stuffy nose
•swelling
•shortness of breath
Ask your prescriber or health care professional before you change your brand of pancrelipase. Each brand of pancrelipase contains different amounts of enzymes and may not give the same results.
Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication. Follow the instructions of your health care professional regarding your diet.
Do not hold the tablet or capsule in your mouth or chew it; the enzymes in the medicine may cause mouth sores.
Do not take antacids containing calcium or magnesium.
