Atropine Sulphate Eye Drops works by blocking the receptors in the muscles of the eye (muscarinic receptors). By blocking these receptors, Atropine Sulphate Eye Drops produces dilatation of the pupil (mydriasis) and prevents the eye from accommodating for near vision (cycloplegia). Atropine Sulphate Eye Drops is given as eye drops to dilate the pupil and relax the lens so that eye examinations can be carried out thoroughly. Atropine Sulphate Eye Drops also acts on receptors in the blood vessels of the eye. This causes the blood vessels to narrow which results in decreased blood flow to the eye. By decreasing the amount of blood flowing through the vessels of the eye, there is a reduction in the appearance of redness. Phenylephrine may be used with atropine to relax the eye muscles that inflame and over-contract in conditions such as uveitus. It is often used to aid eye examinations in young children and relax the muscles that inflame and over-contract in the eye in conditions such as uveitus.
