Warts are minor local infections caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus invades the skin cells and causes them to multiply rapidly. There are at least 50 kinds of warts caused by this virus. In fact, almost everyone will develop a wart at some time or other. Warts are not a sign of poor hygiene, and should not be considered a source of embarrassment. The virus can quite readily be passed from one part of the body to another, or from person to person. The virus can also be spread by contact with the skin shed from a wart. Treatment for warts is advisable if they are on the hands or feet, or on any area where they can spread easily. In fact, removing a wart is probably the best way to prevent new warts from forming. Common warts are relatively easy to remove. You can use one of the topical, non prescription compounds that are available over-the-counter. They are safe and painless. Most of them work by eliminating successive layers until the wart is gone. When using them, it's important to follow instructions and to apply carefully so as not to irritate surrounding skin. Afterwards, the dry skin should be removed with a pumice stone. See your doctor if a wart doesn't respond to this treatment. He or she may prescribe a stronger wart remedy. Plantar warts and genital warts also require professional medical attention.
