Mobic [Mobicox (meloxicam)] is used to relieve the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis in adults. You should not take Mobic [Mobicox (meloxicam)] if you have experienced asthma, hives, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). A few examples of other NSAIDs are ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, nabumetone, and ketoprofen. Serious problems from stomach ulcers such as bleeding are recognized complications in people treated with NSAIDs. Similar problems have occurred in people treated with Mobic [Mobicox (meloxicam)]. The likelihood of stomach problems increases the longer you take drugs like Mobic [Mobicox (meloxicam)]. However, even short-term treatment is not without risk. These problems can happen without any warning, but in some people may cause symptoms such as gnawing or burning stomach pain, black or tarry stools, or vomiting. If this happens, stop taking Mobic [Mobicox (meloxicam)] and call your health care provider right away. Serious problems such as liver damage have occurred in people treated with NSAIDs. Some of the warning signs of liver damage can be nausea, vomiting, fatigue, loss of appetite, itching, yellow coloring of skin or eyes, "flu-like" symptoms and dark urine. If you experience any of these symptoms, call your health care provider right away. Mobic [Mobicox (meloxicam)] can cause your body to retain fluid and swell. If you have asthma, you may have aspirin-sensitive asthma. If an aspirin-sensitive asthmatic takes aspirin it can cause severe narrowing of the airway (bronchospasm), and even death. Since this type of reaction also has occurred after taking NSAIDs. Mobic [Mobicox (meloxicam)] should not be given to aspirin-sensitive patients. Tell your health care provider if you are trying to become pregnant, are already pregnant, or are breast-feeding.

Because certain other medications can interact with Mobic [Mobicox (meloxicam)], review all medications that you are taking with your health care provider, including those that you take without a prescription. Rarely, serious ulcers have occurred in patients taking Mobic [Mobicox (meloxicam)].

Effects - How it works in the body

Mobic belongs to the family of drugs known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) medicine and commonly used for the treatment or prevention of the symptoms of inflammation and eases mild to moderate pain. Mobic is used to relieve the pain and stiffness of osteoarthritis. Mobic is also used to reduce fever and relieves the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (rheumatism), osteoarthritis. It works by blocking the production of a chemical (prostaglandin) which the body produces in response to injury or certain diseases. This prostaglandin would otherwise go on to cause swelling, pain and inflammation. All the medicines in this group reduce inflammation caused by the body's own immune system and are effective pain killers. Because prostaglandin also has useful roles in the body, particularly maintaining a healthy stomach lining, blocking its action often leads to the classic NSAID side-effects of stomach problems. Mobic belongs to a more recent generation of NSAIDs which objective to block more selectively the "bad" prostaglandin, thereby reducing side-effects. However, it is not completely selective and the potential for side-effects remains.
