Combivent
Combivent is a drug consisting of Albuterol and Ipratropium, comes in the category of drugs called Bronchodilators and is used for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Combivent comes in the form of inhaler or nebulized solution, and helps in the broadening the air passages that helps in respiration. Combivent is being manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim, and Combivent is available in the form of 100 mcg salbutamol / 20mcg ipratopium bromide, 200 doses.
What are the major disorders for which Combivent may be Used?
Combivent is most commonly used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
COPD is also called Chronic obstructive airway disease or Chronic obstructive lung disease COPD is basically a combination of various lung diseases, including asthmatic bronchitis, chronic bronchitis (with normal airflow), chronic obstructive bronchitis, bullous disease, and emphysema.
A person suffering from COPD has a deformed shape of airways and air sacs, thus creating a problem for proper incoming and outgoing of air. The reasons being that air passages lose their flexibility, the walls of air passages become thick and more mucus is being formed in them thus blocking the passage.
This is such a problem, which is not completely curable. However, the intake of certain medicines, etc. can help the patient feel better.
Emphysema and Chronic Bronchitis mainly characterize COPD. In the emphysema type of COPD, the walls between many of the air sacs are destroyed, leading to a few large air sacs, instead of many tiny ones Poor exchange of the oxygen and carbon dioxide causes shortness of breath.
In chronic bronchitis, the airways have become inflamed and thickened and there is an increase in the number and size of the mucus-producing cells. This results in excessive mucus production, which in turn contributes to cough and difficulty getting air in and out of the lungs.
Now, due to this blocking the person feels uneasy to breath, and becomes totally restlessness. If this kind of a situation continues for a longer period, the person may die due to insufficient supply of oxygen to the heart. In Asthma the airways of the lungs become either narrowed or completely blocked, thus creating a hurdle for the normal breathing process.
Combivent may be taken by patients suffering from COPD.
How Combivent works?
Combivent comes in the category of drugs called Bronchodilators. The two active ingredients of Combivent act in distinctly different ways. Ipratropium quells airway-closing spasms in the bronchial walls. Albuterol relaxes the muscles in the walls, permitting them to expand. When used together, the two ingredients provide more relief than either can do alone.
Combivent is for inhalation, as they directly pass on to the lungs giving instant relief. They inturn relax the muscles surrounding the airways, and helps the person to breathe easily.
Bronchodilators are of two kinds i.e. short-acting or long-acting.
Depending upon the complexity of the problem, the specific kind of Bronchodilator may be used. A person having mild COPD is recommended a short-acting bronchodilator, and is used only when required. But if a person has severe COPD a long-acting bronchodilator is recommended. Combivent has to be used regularly.
Is any prescription required to get Combivent?
Combivent is a kind of inhaler that gives instant relief to the person by opening the air passages. The inhalers are of different kinds, and one must not use any inhaler without the guidance of a doctor. Since COPD is a very serious problem, hence the inhaler should not be used without identifying the complexity of the problem the person is suffering from. Also, the use of inhalers have to be learnt by the doctor, and therefore a prescription and doctor’s advice is definitely required.
Dosage of Combivent?
The inhaler consisting of Combivent consists of 100 mcg salbutamol / 20mcg ipratopium bromide, 200 doses. The usual dosage is 2 inhalations 4 times a day. Depending upon the type of COPD, the frequency of inhalation can be determined. The inhaler is a mouthpiece, which is kept above the tongue and after the teeth. The inhaler is then sprayed inside the mouth, followed by deep but slow breaths. If the problem is severe this process may be repeated. However, the proper use of inhaler can be learnt from the doctor who has prescribed this medication.
What is the minimum duration for which Combivent should be taken?
As per the research done on this uptill now, there is no specific time period identified for the duration of Combivent use. Since this problem cannot be cured completely, the drugs are only meant for temporary relief. So as long as the person feels relief by taking Combivent, it may be continued.
