Polymyxins are a class of antibiotics that destroy bacteria by interfering with part of the bacterial cell wall known as the cytoplasmic membrane. The cytoplasmic membrane is the site of most of the bacterial cell's biochemical activity. By interfering with this function polymyxins prevent the bacteria from surviving.

Trimethoprim is also an antibiotic that works in a similar way of antibiotics called the sulphonamides. Trimethoprim works inside the bacterial cell, where it stops the production of a chemical known as folic acid. Folic acid is necessary for the production of genetic material (DNA). Without the production of DNA the bacterium is not able to reproduce, and the spread of the infection is stopped. These antibiotics are used together to treat bacterial infections of the eye.
