Effects - How it works in the body
Proglycem belongs to a class of medication called Antihypoglycemic drug and commonly used for the treatment of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) that arises from overproduction of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that controls the levels of sugar in the blood. Diazoxide slows down production of insulin by the pancreas and so helps to prevent hypoglycaemia. Proglycem works by preventing release of insulin from the pancreas. Insulin is the main hormone responsible for the control of sugar in the blood. Insulin is released from cells in the pancreas in response to high levels of sugar in the blood, and causes a reduction in the sugar levels in the blood (hypoglycaemia). Proglycem acts by inhibiting the release of insulin from the pancreas. By inhibiting the release of insulin stops blood sugar from being absorbed and so blood sugar levels increase. Proglycem is used for the treatment of people with chronic low blood sugar levels (hypoglycaemia) who have severe symptoms and whom have not been successfully treated with other medicines or surgical procedures. Proglycem also acts on blood vessels, causing the blood vessels to widen. When the blood vessels widen this causes a decrease in blood pressure.
