NOVA-T is indicated for intrauterine contraception in gynecologically normal women of childbearing age. The reported annual pregnancy rate for intrauterine devices is less than 1 to 6 per 100 women. Duration of use: NOVA-T can be left inserted for a maximum of 30 months. If continued contraception is desired by the patient, a new NOVA-T should be inserted at once. The IUD (intrauterine device) is a small T-shaped device that is placed inside a woman's uterus by a doctor and that stays in place until removed. A thin string attached to it hangs down through the cervix into the top of the vagina, and allows you to check that the IUD is still in place. The copper IUD is made of plastic and copper. It prevents pregnancy by stopping sperm from fertilizingan egg and preventing implantation. Copper acts as an effective spermicide to destroy sperm. The IUD is placed inside your uterus by a doctor in their office or clinic and can be inserted immediately postpartum or after a surgical abortion. IUDs can be inserted at any time during the menstrual cycle but it is preferable to insert it at the end of a period to minimize discomfort. Some women experience a brief sharp cramp or sting on insertion. Testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can be done at the time of insertion or preferably well before the insertion to rule out infection. Removal requires an office of clinic visit again where the IUD is simply pulled out. If you suspect that your IUD is not inserted correctly, it should be removed and a new sterile IUD must be reinserted by your physician.
